What is Speech and Language Therapy?

Speech and language therapy is about helping people who have speech, language and communication difficulties to overcome these difficulties. The process involves assessing and responding to the needs of the individual.

My approach

Speech, language and communication skills develop from birth and are crucial in enabling us to fulfil our intellectual, educational, social and emotional lives.

I strongly believe that each child has the right to develop these skills to the best of his or her ability.

In order to do this I approach each child as a unique individual, making sure I learn as much about them as possible at each step of the way in order to make the right decisions to help.

It is important for me to develop the trust of parents/carers as experience has shown me that therapy works best when all those involved with the child are on board with a clear sense of direction.

As a parent of three children myself I have empathy and insight into the potential impact of any difficulty both on the child and on the family unit. Therefore I aim to minimise this impact and am mindful of ensuring that any advice or activities given fit in with busy daily lives.

I see my role as not just helping children and young people overcome their speech, language and communication difficulties but often acting as an advocate for them and their families in a world where little is still really understood about such difficulties.
