What is Speech and Language Therapy?

Speech and Language therapy is about helping people who have speech, language and communication difficulties to overcome these difficulties. The process involves assessing and responding to the needs of the individual.

The Speech and Language Therapist

The Speech and Language Therapist assesses the child to determine areas of strengths and difficulties. The therapist then considers the impact of any difficulties on the child's life. If appropriate the therapist will decide how the child can be helped to reach their full communication potential. This may be through direct working with the child and through enabling those involved with the child, such as parents and nursery staff, to support development themselves.
