What should I expect?
First appointment
This will take place either in your child's home or at a thoughtfully designed room at the Speech and Language Therapist's home and will last up to one hour. Your input will be welcome and any concerns you have will be discussed and information gathered.
The therapist will assess your child's strengths and difficulties through structured activities, play and interaction. The findings will then be discussed and (where necessary) advice and ideas offered. If further therapy is indicated the appropriate options will be presented and discussed. Following this appointment a written report will be provided.
Further therapy
Aims and objectives will be set at the onset in partnership with the therapist and the parents. These will be worked towards through one or more of the following,
- Individual sessions with the therapist
- A home programme
- A nursery/school programme
- Training for example to family/carers/school staff
Aims are regularly reviewed and recommendations and actions adopted according to the child's changing needs
Therapy will cease when:
- The communication potential is achieved
- The child is not benefiting from therapy at this time
- It is no longer required by the client.
